SYMBOLISM: Flower of life
Live life to the full
Well the last posts have been circular in theme (the circle and the moon) ………..so I thought I would follow this thread for the next few posts
I have often seen this design, in art ,tattoos, graphic design but never really known much about it …
Having read a little about it… perhaps, one of the reasons for having it inked onto your skin is maybe a love of sacred geometry combined mixed with a love of living life to the full
The flower of life ( sometimes called the “blueprint of creation’) has been used as a decorative motif since
ancient times, forms a flower-like pattern with the symmetrical structure of a hexagon.
It consists of seven or more overlapping circles, in which the center of each circle is on the circumference of up to six surrounding circles of the same diameter. However, the surrounding circles need not be clearly or completely drawn; in fact, some ancient symbols that are claimed as examples of the Flower of Life contain only a single circle or hexagon
Leonardo da Vinci studied the Flower of Life’s form and its mathematical properties. He drew the Flower of Life itself, as well as various components such as the Seed of Life.
He drew geometric figures representing shapes such as the platonic solids, a sphere, and a torus, and also used the golden ratio of phi in his artwork; all of which may be derived from the Flower of Life design
A multitude of patterns and shapes
can be traced, including a tree of Life, pentagram, and various representations of three dimensional objects. The six-fold “seed” pattern used as a basis for the larger pattern is often referred to on its own as the seed of life:
I often use the flower of life within my work (website)
Here is an example ….
